I am in Northern Tasmania, why are lilliums emerging now ?
Thanks for your question, Bill! It's likely that the unusual weather has confused them. The Bureau of Meteorology tells us Tasmania's 2021-2022 Summer has been the fourth driest and fifth warmest on record. Generally speaking, they'll likely go into a state of 'suspension' once the temperature cools, and will continue their normal regime come warmer weather in spring. New shoots can be quite tempting for slugs and snails. Try Yates Snail & Slug Bait, a special formulated product developed by Australian Scientists to effectively kill slugs and snails without using an active which is highly toxic to mammals. The product is suitable around seedlings, potted plants, vegetables and clumps of perennials. The pellets break down as nutrients for soils and plants.
