My Escallonia Ivy has become woody, should I cut it right back?

The hedge is around 6ft high and is only green on the top now :(

Hi Helen,

The trick is with your escallonia is to prune it in stages rather than cut them back hard. Once you start to see the plants coming back futher down the bottom of the plant then you will be able to prune them further down. The trouble is once some plants get woody its too late to start to prune them back hard because they sometimes go into shock. Use some seaweed concentrate such as Dynamic lifter liquid around the roots to promote some new growth. I hope this helps.
