Project Detail: Native Sensory Garden and Outdoor Learning Area
Location: Beaumaris, VIC 3193

Project Summary

Students, teachers and the wider school community have assisted in developing the Native Sensory Garden and the Outdoor Learning Area, places where children and staff undertake outdoor learning activities. During lunchtimes, students have been working in the preparation of the garden: digging, mulching, removing weeds, watering and planting. Additionally, students and staff undertook planning for the working bees that took place last year.

The first working bee took place in October 2016 and the whole school community was invited. The participants implemented a walking path and garden beds in the Native Sensory Garden. During the second working bee, in November 2016, the seating areas were completed, mulch was laid, concrete posts for sensory posts were set, bollards to mark each entrance were set in place, and tree stumps were placed for extra seating.

Throughout the progress of the project, the passing general public and neighbours have often stopped to enquire about the garden and remark on how fantastic they thought it was and how they enjoyed watching the progress.
