Spraying Fungicides & Pesticides
Many diseases and pests can be controlled by spraying plants with fungicides or insecticides. These chemicals are available as concentrated liquids or wettable powders, both of which are diluted with water. Many gardeners nowadays prefer to use pre-mixed products that are available in trigger packs or hose-on applicators.
Tips for spraying
- For an even coverage of spray, a continuous supply of liquid to the spray nozzle is important so pressure pumps give the most even flow. A pressure pump sprayer such as Yates Maxi 6 is suitable for the average home garden. It has a long spray rod (lance) with an adjustable nozzle.
- Spray in the early morning or late evening when the air is calm and there is no bee activity.
- Good coverage is important for best results.
- Always direct the spray upwards to cover the underside of leaves.
- It’s a good idea to have a separate sprayer used only for weedicides as even small traces of these chemicals can affect useful plants.
- For small balcony gardens or pot plants a continuous atomiser that holds about one litre of spray would be adequate.
- Don’t be tempted to put in a bit extra for good measure – it is wasteful and may do more harm than good.
- When making up sprays, follow the manufacturer’s directions exactly.
