What is this catapillar ?

Black and yellow stripes about an inch long. The tree had a smell of sour milk around it this caused me to look where it was coming from.
they were on a blood orange tree in a tub, I removed them with old kitchen tongs, in case they were poison. Should I spray the tree also. regards Annie

Answer: It sounds very much like the larvae of the small citrus butterfly. As these beasties consume large volumes of foliage it is worth spraying your tree with Success. This product will cause the caterpillar to stop feeding immediately but you won’t see them disappear for 3 days.
