Seed of the Month - July
Yates Seed of the Month for July 2009 is Wild Rocket, the easy-to-grow leafy green that makes such a
popular addition to mixed salads. Unlike the broad, soft leaves of traditional rocket, dark green wild
rocket leaves are deeply-serrated and have a rich flavour that blends beautifully with other salad
components.
In warm areas Wild Rocket seeds can be sown directly where the plants are to grow but, in cooler
parts, at this time of year it’s better to start seeds in pots or trays of Yates Seed Raising Mix. The
seedlings can then be carefully transplanted after germination.
When sowing, it’s important not to bury Wild Rocket seeds too deeply. Just press them into the surface
of some moist seed raising mix, cover very lightly and water with a gentle mist spray. After
germination, settle the tiny plants into their permanent homes by feeding them with Thrive Soluble Plant
Food. Some Nature’s Way Seaweed Booster will also promote healthy root growth – a strong taproot
enables the plant to survive through tough times.
The flavour of Wild Rocket will always be at its best if the plant is grown quickly. This means regular
watering and feeding with a liquid fertiliser like Thrive. Anything that checks the growth – such as lack
of fertiliser or drought – will result in the leaves developing a bitter flavour that will spoil any salad.
Wild Rocket can be grown in full sun or light shade, and either in pots or garden beds. Removing the
flowers in the bud stage will prevent self-seeding, and picking leaves regularly will encourage new
growth. This short-lived perennial will continue producing good crops for at least a couple of years.
Toss Wild Rocket leaves with some shaved parmesan or drizzle with balsamic vinegar. Yum!!
